Elephants pro israel, donkeys anti?
A new Gallup poll shows very good news for pro-Israel supporters- 63% of Americans are pro-Israel, and 17% are pro-Palestinian. J-Street members are comfortably at home among the 17%. It makes you wonder how one would describe the members of Congress who hang out with J-Street, and legitimize the group? Over the last 20 years, about 20% of the American population has moved from not supporting either side to backing Israel. That increase in support has come almost exclusively from Republicans and conservatives. 85% of Republican now support Israel, while fewer than 50% of Democrats do. This did not happen by accident, and a lot of the reason for the increase in Jewish support is due to the effort initiated by Speaker Newt Gingrich after 1994 to make the pro-Israel agenda a central theme of the Republican Party. On the other side, the Democrats, and the left have continued their long slow march that started with George McGovern, to making support for Israel little more than a checkmark near the bottom of a long agenda list, and for some, crossing over to the Palestinian side.
